Character History:
THIS HISTORY CONTAINS SPOILERS for all of the CLAMP School Detectives manga series. And for portions of the 20 Mensou, Duklyon, and X manga series. Head-canon was used to fill in the gaps before and after the manga (meaning almost everything that happened outside of his 6th grade year).
The youngest son of the Imonoyama Zaibatsu (Japanese aristocracy), Nokoru has three older brothers, Hajime, Tsuzuku and Owaru*. His family is said to have a net worth of more than the Japanese annual budget (circa 1983) and built the pentagram shaped CLAMP school in Tokyo. The family helps keep the school running (both managerially and financially), as well as owning several other companies. Because of his family's status, it was always known that Nokoru's life could be in danger from those who wanted to use him or extort money from his family. Nokoru quickly began to distance himself from others. He didn't want his friends to be hurt or used against him, so he never let anyone get close to him. By the time he was in third grade (at only age 7)**, NASA was already trying to scout him, and he was the head of his family's Electrical Engineering Department. He was also the Chairman of CLAMP School's Elementary School Division, managing the student government for all the 1st - 6th graders by himself.
During his 3rd grade year he met Suoh Takamura, a new transfer student to the 2nd Grade class. Suoh had quickly gained a following amoung the female student body, much like Nokoru, and caught Nokoru's eye. He looked into Suoh's files and found that he was extremely skilled in martial arts and his grades were at the top of his class. He decided on asking Suoh to join the student council, but before his plan could be put into action, they were both kidnapped from a park.
The organization that kidnapped them wanted Nokoru to work for them at the top of their engineering department. Nokoru politely refused, until the woman in charge threatened Suoh. However, Suoh had managed to escape on his own, and came in to rescue Nokoru. Seeing their chance, Nokoru found the woman's secret escape hatch in the floor and they both escaped onto the roof and then an inflatable penguin. After this rather stressful misadventure, the two became friends, Suoh vowing to protect Nokoru with his life, as well as agreeing to help on the student council.
Over the next two to three years Suoh and Nokoru grew to become close friends. Their work with the student council eased some of Suoh’s seriousness, as well as some of Nokoru’s reservations. Nokoru kept his position of Chairman, and Suoh took on the role of Secretary for the Elementary School Division. They were joined by Akira Ijyuin who became Treasurer, and helped restrain Nokoru’s antics to some degree. Around the time Nokoru entered the 6th grade he took over as the Director General of the CLAMP School Defenders (otherwise known as Duklyon). Duklyon is a secret organization created by the school’s founders to help clean up problems around the school. Nokoru recruited the current members of the force (Sophomore Eri Chusonji, and Freshmen Kentarou Higashikunimaru, and Takeshi Shukaido) to battle the Imonoyama Shopping District Association. As Director General, Nokoru gave the peace-keeping force information on the Imonoyama Shopping District Association’s movements and wrong doings. He kept his identity a secret from them, appearing in sunglasses and hardly ever in person.
Through an interesting series of events, the leader of the Imonoyama Shopping District Association, Kotobuki Sukiyabashi, began dating Eri. Kotobuki's fiancee, however began attacking CLAMP school. Torn, Kotobuki attempted to stay out of the fighting but couldn't help protecting Eri. Kotobuki's fiancee was defeated when Kotobuki declared he wished to elope with Eri. Nokoru, having known the truth behind Eri and Kotobuki's relationship from the start endorsed their love and welcomed both of them back within the ranks of Duklyon upon their return. At which point Nokoru informs them of a new group threatening the school and sends them back to work.
While scouting the location for the Elementary Division's Christmas party (Tokyo Tower, from an Airship...because Noku wanted to...), Nokoru spotted an old woman, crying. Unable to keep her suffering from his mind, Nokoru convinces Suoh and Akira to go with him to find her the next day. They find her at Tokyo Tower and Nokoru tries to cheer her up, but they are interrupted by a group of thugs. The thugs had been hired by her brother-in-law to try and force her to sell the family estate. Her late husband had gone missing during the war (presumably WWII) and had left her alone, a one time maid widowed by the master of a large estate. Because of her husband's death, her brother-in-law believes that she is no longer part of the family, and motivated by his own greed had the deed to the house and her personal seal stolen. Since the robbery, her brother-in-law had been sending the thugs to remove her in any way possible, even if it came to physical harm. Not wanting to see the old woman hurt anymore, Nokoru formulates a plan stop the woman's brother-in-law as well as insure her ownership of the estate.
Nokoru goes to the woman's brother-in-law, who is a failing real estate developer, and buys the house for its approximate value. Once that deal is finalized and the old woman can live in peace, Nokoru-tachi go back to the brother-in-law and buy his office for much more than it is worth. Nokoru has the brother-in-law sign a contract concerning some 'pets' that Nokoru wishes to keep at the office. The man signs the contract without reading it and is as surprised as his staff when the office is filled with exotic animals. The brother-in-law confronts Nokoru about the animals and demands that he leave and that the contract be voided. Nokoru waves the contract in his face saying that he is allowed to do what he wants with the animals. Still holding firm, the brother-in-law tells Nokoru he wants the boy and his animals out. Nokoru amusedly has Suoh read the penalties for breaking the contract which include repayment of the buying price times 5.
Confident that the man would pay rather than be surrounded by lions and leopards and the like, Nokoru, Suoh and Akira left the brother-in-law at his office. Suoh suggests they look for the woman's husband who may still be alive, but Nokoru declines, stating that if they find him it may kill the old woman's hope. Instead they use the reservation for the Elementary Division Christmas Party to hold a party just for her. (However, this leaves them without a place and date for the actual party, much to Suoh's dismay.)
After their success with helping the old woman, the Chairwoman asked Nokoru if he, Suoh and Akira would find the faculty roster that had gone missing. The list had been stolen right off the Chairwoman's desk, leading Nokoru to believe that someone within CLAMP School must have taken it. The room had been completely locked with a state of the art security system, with only an open window several stories up as an access point. The list was on a micro disk, and was due to be posted the next day with no way to rewrite it. Putting their collective IQs together, the three boys decide to wait to see if the culprit comes back. It does and turns out to be a bird who was attracted by a vase of flowers in the room. It had accidentally picked up the disk while eating the flower petals off the desk. They manage to retrieve the micro disk without much trouble once they find the bird's nest.
With their second successful case, Nokoru officially establishes the CLAMP School Detective Agency with the goal of helping students in need, mostly of the female variety. He also drags Suoh and Akira into his little agency. Their first case involves finding a girl's missing pet peacock. Nokoru demonstrates his ability to sense when a girl needs help, and rushes off to find her. However even after using all of the school's video feed they are unable to find the bird after three days. So Nokoru, unconventional as ever, has all the peacocks from the Tokyo Zoo brought to the school as lures. After that, the bird comes to them and is reunited with its owner unharmed.
When Valentine's Day rolls around, the Detectives are bombarded by chocolates from their female fans. However, unlike most of the student body, one girl does not believe in Nokoru's feminist claims. She challenges him to find a package she had hidden on campus within an allotted time or resign from his student council office. Nokoru agrees to her terms but only if she will smile for him if he wins the challenge. With three days to find the package by himself, Nokoru goes around the campus, looking everywhere for the package. When the deadline gets dangerously close, the girl begins to apologize for being so rude, however, Nokoru had managed to find the package buried near one of her favourite spots on campus. He'd watched her routine to figure out the places she went on a daily basis (Suoh comments he probably knows the schedules of every female student on campus). The package had the chocolates she was going to give him for Valentine's Day, which Nokoru gratefully accepts. Then girl confesses that she'd been in love with him since she first saw him but was worried he wouldn't want them because he was so popular. Nokoru dismisses her concerns and only asks she holds up her portion of the deal and smile.
Summer rolls around just in time for a ghostly case to be brought to the CSD's attention. Nokoru-tachi investigates and finds the ghost appears in the same place and time each night and that cats can be heard. With some closer investigation, they discover the ghost was a ruse put together by a student who had found some kittens but was unable to keep them herself. She'd hide them on campus during classes, then bring them to the art building at night, with the 'ghost' to keep them from being discovered. Nokoru agrees to have the student council watch the kittens until homes can be found for them all.
Their next case comes in the form of threats against the formal dance with the Kindergarten Division. Letters, flyers, banners and finally a phone call all demand that the dance be canceled. Nokoru answers the phone call and the caller threatens to hurt him if the dance isn't called off. He doesn't tell his two friends that he was personally threatened and they continue with the plans for the dance. During the preparations in the dance hall, Nokoru is pushed over a balcony. Suoh barely catches him and receives a sprained ankle for his trouble. Nokoru is unharmed, and insists they continue on with the dance for the sake of all the people looking forward to it. The day of the dance, Suoh and Akira keep a close eye on Nokoru, however he had already figured out who had been sending the threats. The girl hadn't wanted the dance to go on because she didn't want to be on the sidelines when she admired Nokoru so much. Though he managed to cheer her up with a dance. She had only meant to scare Nokoru on the balcony, not knowing how horrible he was at sports, and thus expecting him to land safely. In the end, major crises were averted, however Nokoru's offer to dance set their fans on them and they chose to leave the dance running.
Not above helping his friends without them knowing it, Nokoru begins to investigate by himself when he notices Suoh is out of sorts. However in the middle of it all is a strange tornado like phenomenon that had been effecting circular structures on the campus. In the meantime Nokoru insists that Suoh go to the rehersal for the Kindergarten Division's Cultural Fair. Nokoru had helped the Kindergarten Division's Chairwoman to rearrange the wisteria into a circular stage for the festival, not yet knowing the new structure's shape would endanger it. As Nokoru gathered information on both his cases, he discovered that Suoh had spotted one of the kindergarten students practicing a few days before, and had started to like her. He also figured out that the school's missle testing system was setting off the tornadoes which built in force in circular structures. With that news, Suoh ran off to save the kindergarten girl, Nagisa Azuya. He manages to reach her just in time, and they begin to form a friendship and soon after begin dating. He then takes great enjoyment in teasing Suoh about his blossoming romance, as well as wonder who Akira's mystery girl is.
After building an arctic escape in the council office and avoiding paperwork, Suoh forces Nokoru to sit down and work through the stacks that had piled up. Once he'd managed to finish some of it, he spotted something stuck in the tree outside the window. Not saying what he was doing, Nokoru jumped out of the window and into the tree to retrieve a silk stocking, nearly giving Suoh a heart attack in the process. Rather than do paperwork, Nokoru decided to find the owner of the stocking. Using all his deductive skills, Nokoru tires to figure out which girl the stocking belongs to, but is beaten to it when the girl comes to their office looking for it. After which Suoh chains Nokoru to his desk in order to finish his paperwork.
Soon afterward, the Chairwoman begins watching Suoh and Akira. They both notice someone watching them but are unable to figure out who at first. She had wanted to test the two of them, to see if they were fit to protect Nokoru. After speaking with them, she finds that they are both suitable friends and protectors for the young chairman. They both pledge their loyalty to Nokoru, even though his antics occasionally get out of hand, and even though he avoids his paperwork, and sends them on wild goose chases to find him when he's just asleep under his desk. But with the detective agency booming, and the student body happy with their governing, they were willing to put up with his quirks.
Nokoru was elected Chairman of the Middle School Division without much contest. However he wasn't really willing to run the student council by himself again. Or find new council members. Instead he petitioned his mother the current Chairwoman of CLAMP School, to have Suoh and Akira on his council, even though they were still in elementary school. She agreed, however Akira decided to split his time between the Middle School and Elementary School Councils in order to help his girlfriend, Utako Okawa, who was now the Chairman of the Elementary School Division. While middle school was full of romance for his two best friends, Nokoru kept to himself. His parents theorized that he was waiting for the right person. Secretly he was afraid of the retaliation of his fan club. But mostly, he just hadn't found anyone special that would be worth the risk it would put them at. Instead he focused on his school work the student council, Duklyon, and his various responsibilities to his family's companies.
By the time Nokoru reached High School, his mother had been actively grooming him to take over as the head of of the school. Meanwhile his brothers had already started to take over as heads of other portions of the family's rather expansive resources and companies. She also began preparing Nokoru for the 'Promised Day' where a fated battle would decide the future of Humanity. CLAMP School had been re-designed on the request of Touru Shirou in order to protect the Shinken, a magical sword that would be needed in the final battle. As the future Head of CLAMP School, Nokoru would be in charge of helping Kamui leading up to the final battle. However all of that was far off, though not unimportant, in Nokoru's mind and he dove into his studies before quickly finding himself bored. So he entertained himself with keeping up the CLAMP School Detective Agency, mostly by himself, under the stipulation that it was 'valuable experience for answering the needs and problems of future students'.
At 16, Nokoru graduated from CLAMP School's High School Division, and moved onto the University, yet again taking up his post as Class Chairman. He chose to double major in Engineering and Public Relations, while minoring in Physics. His work as a consultant for his family's various companies increased, though that kind of work was hardly interesting for very long. As a result though, he finally dropped the detective agency, and his duties as Director Chairman of Duklyon. (Eri had graduated from college the year before and Kentarou, Takeshi, and Kotobuki graduated that year. It seemed as good a time as ever to move on and let the Defenders handle themselves.) By the time he'd reached his third year of university, Nokoru was balancing school, shadowing his mother the Chairwoman, his consulting, and his student council responsibilities. Some of the adults around him and even a few of his classmates wondered when he'd burn out. But he was happy to juggle his responsibilities, it at least kept his life amusing.
*This is a horribly obscure reference and the names are only noted in the edges of panels. (Only Tsuzuku and Owaru, I added Hajime.) It is noted that Nokoru is the youngest in the family in the 3rd volume of the manga however. Tsuzuku, Owaru and Hajime are the names of three of the four brothers from the Japanese novel series Souryuden. The youngest brother's name can be read as either Amaru or Nokoru. In CLAMP's doujin of Souryuden they chose the reading Nokoru and then passed the name onto the CSD character.
**CLAMP cites Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira's ages as all being 9 when the manga begins. I aged Nokoru up to 10 for the beginning of the manga, but he is still two grades ahead of where he should be. (They do not allow you to skip grades in Japan, instead you go to cram school to take higher level courses.) I'm atesting this oddity to the facts that he's a genius and that his family owns the school.
Character Personality: A brilliant and caring young man, Nokoru is known by his two close friends to be extremely lazy. He spends almost as much time figuring out new ways to shirk his responsibilities as he does working. Though, when crunch time comes, he is always working away until the job is done. However sometimes he puts more thought into how to complete his assignments at the very last minute, than the actual assignment.
He has a soft spot for any female, young or old, and will not tolerate anyone mistreating a girl. He'll often put himself in harm's way, or difficult situations in order to help a girl. However he treats everyone he meets the same, excluding Akira and Suoh, avoiding favouritism to protect the person from those who might want to hurt him, and to avoid his fans lashing out at anyone they might see as a threat. He is very good at knowing someone's true intentions. Including knowing someone's romantic feelings for someone else. However he seems to be a little slower on the uptake if the feelings are directed at himself.
Despite his work ethic, or lack there of, he is very determined. Once he sets his mind to something, or comes up with a plan, he won't stop until he sees it executed flawlessly. Especially if he has a personal interest in it. He can be a little aloof, but is generally the one in charge. He's natural leader and people are easily drawn to his friendly personality.
Digimon Personality: Fugu is a little bit of an airhead, spurring his nickname (fugu means blowfish in Japanese). He enjoys games, jokes and the occasional prank. But is really good natured at heart. He acts silly and is rarely serious, letting his good humor carry him, even in fights. Because of this he is sometimes seen as over confident in his abilities, but again he takes this in stride and would more likely crack a joke about it. He puts a lot of weight on loyalty, and trusts others to keep their promises. If someone fails to keep a promise, know that his determination will smolder until he succeeds in making you see your wrong doing. He is fairly intelligent and enjoys puzzles and riddles and will sometimes try to come up with his own, to mixed success. It's fairly hard to dampen his spirits, but even when it happens, it is only a short time until he is back to his normal, slightly goofy self. He does have a fairly short temper for questions, and doesn't like being asked too many of them. Though he doesn't often lose his cool over something so small.
Character Abilities: Nokoru is very bad at sports and physical activities, unless it evolves helping a girl. (He seems to be able to sense if there is a girl in trouble within a few hundred yards of him.) He is however a genius and excels especially in the fields of engineering and management. He has an extremely good memory, and knows every female student at CLAMP School, including their handwriting and their daily schedules.
He is very good at using information networks and gathering information on his own. He has unlimited resources and manages to put them to good use to help others. When he doesn't have material resources at his disposal, he uses his deductive and problem solving skills to help.
Sample RP: Nokoru spun the white umbrella around his wrist by the curved handle. He was 99% sure the girl had left it on purpose. After all, his fans had become more out going as they’d all grown up. However, none of them had tried to kill or injure him recently in order to keep anyone else from having him. For that he was glad. In the meantime he needed to track down this girl. At the moment Nokoru figured she should be at lunch with her friends at the cafe near the center of the campus. He'd been all the way at the other end of campus though, and she'd run off before he'd noticed that she had left the umbrella.
A raindrop landing on his nose stopped him. He looked up as it began to pour. Cursing the summer rainy season, Nokoru opened the umbrella. After leaving it with him to return, the least the girl could do was excuse his use of it. He continued across the campus, being stopped along the way a few times by other students and teachers a few times. When he was almost to the cafe, Nokoru noticed that a slip of paper had managed to stick to the corner of the umbrella.
'Must have gotten stuck on when she set it down...' He thought to himself as he tugged the paper free and glanced at it. It looked vaguely like the fuda that was used in manga by spiritualists. Sighing, he began to crumple the strip of paper in one hand. The last thing he needed was a girl trying to use magic on him. It was doubtful she really knew anything about spells. The girl had probably copied it from a book she had found in some tiny occult shop. That was when the umbrella began to lift him into the air. He tried to let go of it, but it seemed that the handle was stuck to his hand somehow. Grabbing it with his other hand he held on for dear life as he floated up and up and up until he could almost see all of CLAMP School below him.
Then as suddenly as it had started, the umbrella stopped. For a few moments Nokoru blinked. He was dangling from an umbrella hundreds of feet in the air with no apparent way to get down. "Okay...I've had worse days. No one is pointing a gun at me...though...even if Suoh was there to catch me, I don't think it would matter."
He debated his very limited options for a few minutes before the umbrella began moving again. After a while he lost interest in what was going on below him, things had suddenly become unfamiliar and he wasn't sure if it was due to not paying attention at the right moment, or because he was truly flying over somewhere he'd never been before. Besides the swaying of the umbrella was making him slightly sick. At least whatever power it was that was keeping him aloft was also keeping him from letting go of the damn thing.
Finally the umbrella began to descend into a lightly forested area. He could see buildings behind and in front of him, but again, none of it looked familiar. Landing with a stumble and barely saving himself from doing a face plant into the underbrush, Nokoru looked around. Everything looked normal. And he felt fine, except for the fact that his hand felt like it was about to fall off. He closed the umbrella and found that his hand was no longer attached to its handle. Tucking it under his arm, he walked around the base of a large tree and into a strange white and purple striped 'thing'. It yelped and waddled away a few paces before turning around to stare at him.
"I've been reading too much manga late at night...and now Suoh is going to yell at me for falling asleep in the middle of the day."
The 'thing' raised an eyebrow, which only made Nokoru more confident that he'd finally collapsed from over work. "Isn't it more likely that anime would give you nightmares?"
"...um..."
"Well I mean the images are tired to sound and motion so you would have a more emotional reaction to anime than to manga."
"...that seems logical."
"Though," The 'thing' tapped its chin with a clawed flipper, "That whole thing about you most likely thinking you're dreaming? Not so true. I'm Fugu!"
"Blowfish?"
"Yup!"
"Imonoyama Nokoru."
"Sweet, I've got a tamer...okay, now you have to stand on one foot and hop all around me for the ceremony to be over."
Nokoru tilted his head then shrugged and did as the strange creature had asked. After all, it was always a good idea to do what the characters in your own dream wanted you to. And this seemed harmless. At least until he tripped and fell on a tree root.
"Oops...not very graceful there, ne?"
Sitting up, and pulling leaves from his hair, Nokoru glared at the thing, "You try hopping on one foot...flipper...then."
Fugu shook his head with a grin, "No thanks, don't have to. Privileges of being a 'mon, you know? Welcome to the Digital World by the way!"
Sample Journal Entry:
[Image of a forest shows up and the camera moves around for a while before becoming more steady.]
Testing? This is really interesting. Even the Imonoyama Electronics Company is still years and years away from a device this compact. So there's a video camera, does it take stills as well?
Yeah...course it does.
Wow, amazing...what else?
Its basically a really high tech cell phone. All the bells and whistles...it even jingles like a bell!
Cell...phone?
Short for cellular? You take it places you know? Don't have to have a phone jack or plug it in...
Oh! A portable phone!
Duh, when are you from!? The 80's!? Geez, at least you aren't in spandex or something.
[A blond young man comes into view as the camera is turned around. He smiles and waves at it before pointing it towards the slightly annoyed Gomamon.]
Sorry, this is just a cool toy! When I wake up I'm going to have my brother start research for it right away!
Its the attack of the 80's...beware, and someone come and save me from him damnit!
